Hermes Agent Hosting
You don't need hosting to use Hermes Agent. The CLI and desktop app run on your own computer, and the software is free. Hosting only matters when Hermes must keep working while that computer is off — answering Telegram or Discord, running scheduled jobs, or keeping Bot Mode bots online.
If it must stay online, you have two kinds of choice: run the server yourself (an always-on home machine or a VPS, including DigitalOcean's Hermes 1-Click image) or let someone else run it (Hermes Cloud from Nous Research, or an independent host such as FlyHermes or Hostinger). The biggest cost difference is usually not the server but whether model usage is included — see Hermes cost.
Checked against official Nous Research sources on September 26, 2026 (Hermes Agent v0.21.5).
The six places to run Hermes, compared
Prices and descriptions below come from each provider's own public pages, checked September 26, 2026. Blank means the provider does not publish it — not that the feature is missing. We have not deployed or benchmarked any of these, so nothing here rates reliability, speed, or ease.
| Who runs the server | Published fixed price | Model usage | Online while your computer is off? | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your computer | You | None (hardware you own) | Separate — any provider, or local models | No |
| Always-on home machine | You | None beyond hardware and electricity | Separate — any provider, or local models | Yes, while its power and internet stay up |
| Self-managed VPS (incl. DigitalOcean 1-Click) | You, on the provider's hardware | Your plan. Example: DigitalOcean Basic 4 GiB / 2 vCPU, $24/mo | Separate — any provider | Yes |
| Hermes Cloud (Nous Research) | Nous Research | $0.56/day Medium or $1.09/day Large while running; $0.03/day stopped | Separate — billed from the same Portal credits | Yes, while running |
| FlyHermes (independent) | FlyHermes | $49/mo, or $39/mo billed yearly ($468) | Included up to a monthly allowance (amount not published) | Yes |
| Hostinger Managed Hermes Agent | Hostinger | $5.99/mo on a 2-year term paid upfront; renews at $11.99/mo | Pre-configured AI credits included (amount not published) | Yes |
| Persistence & backups (as documented) | Your level of control | Documented setup steps | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your computer | Your disk. Hermes ships hermes backup for a full zip of its data. | Full | Install, then hermes setup |
| Always-on home machine | Your disk; hermes backup | Full, including local GPUs on your network | Install, set up, install the gateway as a service; remote access is up to you |
| Self-managed VPS | Server disk; provider backups are an optional extra (DigitalOcean: +20% weekly or +30% daily of the Droplet price); hermes backup | Full root | Create server, SSH in, install (or use the 1-Click image), set up, install the gateway service — VPS guide |
| Hermes Cloud | “Dedicated, persistent workspace”: files, memory, and config persist while running or stopped. Backups not described. | Nous-managed container; no shell/root access documented | Portal: add ≥ $2 credit or a subscription, name the agent, pick model and size, deploy |
| FlyHermes | “Persistent memory” listed. Backups not described on the pricing page. | Managed; no SSH or shell access mentioned | Sign up; Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, and web chat listed |
| Hostinger Managed | “We handle updates, backups, and compatibility checks” — frequency not stated | “CLI access included”; root access is listed for Hostinger's separate VPS product | Purchase; Telegram pairing built in |
- DigitalOcean's Hermes 1-Click image is a VPS, not managed hosting. It creates a Droplet with Hermes preinstalled; you still run, update, and secure the server. The image currently ships Hermes 2026.9.14 (v0.21.3), two releases behind v0.21.5 — see the VPS page.
- Hermes Cloud pricing is per day, not per month. Our arithmetic for 30 days of 24/7 running: Medium ≈ $16.80, Large ≈ $32.70. The Cloud page also says instances “scale to zero when idle”, so treat these as upper bounds for hosting alone.
- Hostinger's $5.99 is an introductory rate. Paid upfront for 24 months that is $143.76; the renewal rate works out to $287.76 per 24 months (our arithmetic; Hostinger's own cost article says prices exclude VAT). Hostinger also sells a separate self-managed VPS with a Hermes Docker template — that belongs in the VPS row.
- “Included” model usage has a ceiling. Neither FlyHermes nor Hostinger publishes the size of the included allowance or credits on the pages we checked. Past it, FlyHermes' pricing page does not say what happens; Hostinger says you can buy more credits or connect your own AI provider.
How to choose where to run it
These are decision questions, not a ranking. Answer them in order:
- Does Hermes need to work while your computer is off? If not, run it locally — install guide. Nothing on this page applies until you do.
- Do you want to administer a Linux server? Self-managed paths (home machine or VPS) give you root, any model provider, and your own backups — and make updates, security, and restarts your job. Managed paths remove the server work but also remove root access.
- Do you want model usage bundled or billed separately? Hermes Cloud and self-managed paths bill models separately (Cloud from Nous Portal credits). FlyHermes and Hostinger Managed include an allowance of unpublished size.
- Do you already pay for models? A ChatGPT/Codex plan, GitHub Copilot, SuperGrok, Claude Max extra usage, or an API key can power Hermes on any self-managed path — see models. Whether a managed host lets you bring that subscription is a question for the host.
- Do you want to run local models? That needs your own GPU hardware: a home machine or a GPU server you manage. None of the managed hosts above advertises it on the pages we checked.
What each option means in practice
Your own computer
The default. Hermes and its data (~/.hermes/) live on your machine; scheduled jobs and messaging gateways stop when it sleeps. Cost is only the models and tools you use.
An always-on home machine
A mini PC, spare laptop, or homelab server running Linux, macOS, or Windows. Setup is the same as a VPS — install, then run the gateway as a service (hermes gateway install; on Linux, a system service or a user service with lingering). The official docs do not cover reaching a home machine from outside your network; that part (a VPN such as Tailscale, or a tunnel) is up to you.
A self-managed VPS
Any Linux server you rent. You choose the size (Nous publishes no single official requirement), the OS, the backups, and the model provider. DigitalOcean offers a Hermes 1-Click image; everywhere else you run the official installer or the official Docker image. The VPS guide covers all three paths, sizing anchors, updates, and migration.
Hermes Cloud (Nous Research)
The official managed option, deployed from Nous Portal. Medium is 2 GB RAM / 4 vCPUs / 10 concurrent sessions; Large is 4 GB RAM / 8 vCPUs / 20 sessions. Hosting, models, and Tool Gateway calls all draw from one Portal credit balance, and Hermes Desktop can connect to a Cloud agent directly. Full details: Hermes Cloud pricing & setup.
FlyHermes
An independent service that states it is “not affiliated with Nous Research”. One plan, FlyHermes Pro: $49/month, or $39/month billed yearly ($468). The pricing page lists a hosted agent, model access (Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Llama), Telegram, Slack, WhatsApp, Discord and web chat, persistent memory, scheduled jobs, and a monthly usage allowance. First-time customers get a 14-day refund window (monthly refunds are reduced by AI credits used).
Hostinger Managed Hermes Agent
A managed plan from the hosting company, separate from its VPS template. Hostinger lists pre-configured AI credits, web search, a visual interface, CLI access, and built-in Telegram pairing, and says it handles updates and backups. Pricing is $5.99/month for a 2-year term paid upfront, renewing at $11.99/month, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. The credit amount, server resources, and backup frequency are not published on the product page.
Moving between options later
Self-managed installs can move with Hermes' own tooling: hermes backup writes a zip of the data root (config, API keys, memories, skills, sessions, profiles) and hermes import restores it on the new machine. The zip contains credentials, so treat it like a password file. The official docs do not describe exporting from or importing into Hermes Cloud or third-party hosts; check with the host before assuming your memory and skills can move.
Details and the difference between hermes backup and hermes profile export are on the VPS page.
